What was old is new again

I was recently given the privilege of reading the life and times of a respected client who had run his own business for 50 years. I have been fortunate to have been in the position of advisor and friend for the last 20 years whilst he has been in retirement. He is 90 now and is turning his mind to passing on to others what he has learnt over the journey. Here are the best bits:

1. Born in 1928, his parents split up when he was 6. This does not determine your destiny!

2. An apprenticeship is a valid career choice

3. Many people work 2 jobs to keep food on the table and riding a push bike to get around was considered "normal" not that long ago.

4. Visiting relatives on a farm is a great experience for young and adolescent people and the joy of open space stays with people for their whole life.

5. Making mistakes is part of the journey. Picking oneself up and keeping going is a sign of character. Making the same mistake more than once is a sign of stubborness.

6. The cliche all for one and one for all applies both to sport and business.

7. Successful people downplay their achievements and give much credit to others.

8. At the end of the day, coaching and playing with sons for ageing sporting Dad's means just as much if not more than winning premierships and making representative teams themselves. There is a bigger picture.

9. Behind every successful businessman and sportsman is a supportive and tolerant partner. The support behind closed doors fortifies the soul for battle.

Without divulging the source, may I repeat the words of a poem I remember from my youth. It goes like this:

A life well lived is a precious gift Of hope and strength and grace, From someone who has made our world A brighter, better place It’s filled with moments, sweet and sad With smiles and sometimes tears, With friendships formed and good times shared And laughter through the years. A life well lived is a legacy Of joy and pride and pleasure, A living, lasting memory Our grateful hearts will treasure

I am touched to have been the recipient of this humbly compiled life work.
